Windows 12: what Microsoft has officially said (and what it hasn't)
NO: Microsoft has not announced Windows 12. That is the official truth and the starting point for everything we are going to say today. We have spent months hearing rumors about a new version, leaks about designs and dates, but the reality is much simpler and, for many, disappointing.
The official silence and what has actually been said
On May 30, 2026, just days before Computex Taipei and Build 2026, Microsoft broke its silence. And it was not to announce anything new, but to deny everything that had been rumored.
Pavan Davuluri, head of Windows and Devices at Microsoft, posted on X (formerly Twitter) that the company would not announce a new operating system (Windows 12). The week would focus on developer news and new hardware.
That statement was the clearest to date. There is no Windows 12 on the immediate horizon. There will be no launch in 2026. And more importantly: Microsoft has not even confirmed the existence of a version with that name.
On the official Microsoft Q&A forums, the answer is always the same: there is no official information, there is no release date, there is no confirmation that work is being done on Windows 12. The company has made it clear that its priority is to continue improving Windows 11, the operating system released in October 2021.
So what is Microsoft actually doing with Windows?
Here is the part that really matters. The fact that there is no Windows 12 does not mean Microsoft is standing still. On the contrary, the strategy has changed completely.
Microsoft does not want to release a separate new version. It wants Windows 11 to be the center of everything, and it is going to turn it into an "Agentic OS", an operating system where artificial intelligence is not an add‑on, but the core of the experience.
The plan involves two major annual Windows 11 updates: 26H1 (first half) and 26H2 (second half). The first of these, 26H1, will lay the foundations for an "AI Shell", an AI‑driven interface that will run on Copilot+ PCs, devices with dedicated Neural Processing Units (NPUs).
What is expected from these updates?
According to official information released through Microsoft channels, the new versions of Windows 11 will include:
- An AI‑powered File Explorer
- Real‑time translations integrated into the system
- "Copilot Actions": automated tasks that AI will execute for you
- Interface improvements: movable taskbar, low‑latency mode, more Start menu customization options, and Windows Update adjustments
- More demanding hardware requirements: at least 40 TOPS (trillions of operations per second) will be needed to run AI features efficiently
And the name "Windows 12"?
According to the most recent reports, Microsoft has officially ruled out launching a new major version under that name. The company has decided to bet on a model of iterative, continuous updates, rather than big‑version release cycles. The idea is that Windows 11 will evolve constantly, without the need for a brand "reset".
What about the rumors and leaks?
Many stories circulate about Windows 12. There is talk of a modular architecture called CorePC, with state separation so the system can be customized per device. There is also mention of a floating interface, with the taskbar separated from the screen edge. And of course, deep AI integration is the recurring theme.
But repeat after me: none of this is official. It is all leaks, speculation, and community wishes. Some things may materialize in Windows 11 updates, others may not. But until Microsoft announces them through its official channels, they are not facts.
Conclusion: the future of Windows is not Windows 12
Microsoft's strategy for 2026 and beyond is not to launch Windows 12. It is to turn Windows 11 into an AI‑driven operating system, with constant updates that add features without needing to change versions.
The company has been clear: there is no Windows 12 in 2026. And there probably will not be one in 2027 if the continuous‑update strategy works.
What's coming next: Windows 11 in 2026 – failure or evolution?
Next Tuesday we are going to take a deep dive into Windows 11. Almost five years have passed since its launch and, for many, the system is still dragging problems that were never fixed. We will talk about why, in 2026, Windows 11 is considered a failure by a significant part of the community and why the promised improvements are not arriving at the pace many expected.
See you in the next post.
